It’s the end of February and you’re off and running with 2020! The plans/goals you set out at the beginning of the year are humming along – possibly with a few ups and downs along the way. It is life, after all. That being said, it’s now at the point of fine-tuning things, adjusting what is and isn’t working… maybe adding a few more things to the mix.

Looking to up your wellness game; to take it to the next level? An affordable daily supplement of Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin D is a worthy investment – one that will certainly repay you with health benefits in spades.

Sometimes you simply don’t know what you’re missing until it comes into your life. (Anecdotally, everyone I know who has started supplementing Omega-3 and Vitamin D have had measurable health improvements, including myself). Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that our bodies cannot produce, that we must find through diet or supplementation.

The three key types of Omega-3 fats are:

  1. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid): Found in certain high-fat plant foods, especially flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts;
  2. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): Found in fatty fish, seafood, fish oil and algal oil;
  3. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): Found in fatty fish, seafood, fish oils, and algal oil.

Omega-3’s are vital for brain development and cardiovascular health. With today’s fast paced living, it can be quite the challenge to get consistent, high-quality sources of ALA, EPA and DHA.

We’re also challenged to get enough Vitamin D. While our bodies do make it naturally through sun exposure, the amount we actually get depends on a lot of factors – including our skin pigmentation, time of day, season and latitude. Vitamin D is critical for the development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones and has been shown to help regulate mood and depression. Calcium can only be absorbed in our bodies when Vitamin D is present. Vitamin D is best absorbed when taken with fats or oils which make Omega- 3’s the perfect combination.

As kids, we would have to choke down horse-pill sized cod liver oil supplements that were remarkably horrendous tasting and honestly just an undertaking to ingest. My Mom’s potted plants had a lot of those horse pills shoved in the soil. Thankfully, times have changed and companies such as Dartmouth-based NutraSea have completely changed the landscape when it comes to Omega-3 + Vitamin D supplements. And, they have a bubblegum flavoured option for kids! (which I must say… is quite good!).

Locally based, NutraSea produces great tasting products in both liquid and gel-format. They are naturally flavoured with plants, roots, fruits and spices. Lemon, mango, chocolate, fresh mint, and crisp apple are just a few of your flavour choices. Wild fish and squid are sourced from Pacific and Atlantic waters, no farmed fish. Lanolin from sheep’s wool is the source for their Vitamin D3. They are totally transparent about the ingredients they use and their products are rigorously third party tested to ensure they meet or exceed what’s on the label.

Vegan or vegetarian? I am delighted to report NutraSea has a new line or vegetarian and vegan-friendly (they are currently exploring certification) plant-based Omega-3 supplements! How do plants get their Omega-3’s? Through micro-algae, which is the basis for the NutraVege line!

Adding Omega-3’s and Vitamin D to your lifestyle has never been more affordable, easier or tasted better! (so long, cod-liver-oil-horse-pills!). Another one of those tiny little things you can do every day, that your future self will thank you for!

*Keep in mind: This is not a paid endorsement/sponsored post. We just love NutraSea and are passionate about the changes we’ve seen in our own lives after incorporating this product into our regular routine.
